August 4, 2007 - Virgin Fest Day 1
3:30 PM: I arrived at Pimlico at about 3:30 PM on Saturday. This was to be my second year to
attend the Virgin music Fest. I missed a few bands, and started out with Incubus. Incubus
started off very mellow, and kicked it a notch by the second song. The third track was one of
my personal favorites, Wish You Were Here, and the whole crowd sang along. I had not kept
up with there latest music, so I didn't know all of their songs, but they all sounded good. Their
set also had to be the smokiest of the two days, with all of the heads lighting up for the
performance.
4:40 PM: After they finished, we walked to the dance tent and watched Danny Tengalia DJ.
This was a welcome break from the already oppressive heat, as the tent had shade and fans.
Danny spun a mix of tribal and progressive house.
5:30 PM: Next on the agenda was LCD Soundsystem. All I can say is, man I wish I would
have went to their show earlier this year at 930. Crazy loud bass, cow bells, multiple
singers... What a great set. They played some of my favorites, like North American Scum and
Daft Punk is Playing at My House. One thing I noticed is James Murphy only dang during the
set. I assumed since he did all of the music, he would do a little more on stage.
6:30 PM: We dashed across the field to catch the Beastie Boys in progress set. We missed
at least a couple of songs, but what we did catch made up for it. The boys were looking
dapper in suits. And hot, you could see the sweat rolling off of their heads on the big screen.
It was insanely crowded, and I had to watch the show from the back. Quick set run down of
what I saw before I left. Sure Shot, It's the Joint, Tough Guy, Live at PJ's, Saborosa, Body
Moving, Pass the Mic, Super Disco Breakin, Brass Monkey, a new song off of their new
instrumental album, Egg Raid on Mojo, Remote Control, 3 MC and 1 DJ, and No Sleep till
Brooklyn. One thing I really dug about the set was the remixes they played. They would start
playing a remixed track in the middle of the classic track.
7:15 PM: We left the Beasties a few minutes early to catch TV on the Radio's set. They ended
up being the band whose shirt I bought this year, (last year was Wolfmother.) They played an
awesome set and they ended it off with one of my favorites, Staring at the Sun. They are
another band that I can't wait to see at the 930 club or a similar venue.
8:45 PM: We closed out the night with Modest Mouse. This was my second time to see them,
and they kicked as much as this time as they did the last. Jonny Marr was a welcome
addition on guitar. The sound was great. Brock and the band were on point that night. Quick
set list for them: Paper Thin Walls, Bur y Me with It, Dashboard, Education, Bukoski, Float On,
We've Got Everything, Fire It Up, Tiny Cities Made of Ashes, a new song, and then the View.
We left a couple of songs early to fight the traffic out.
Day 1 Verdict. Great Music. Expensive Beer. Way too Hot.
